Welcome to the City of Gainesville’s Community Development Department

The CDD is under the supervision and direction of the Community Development Director and Building Official. The department is responsible for overseeing all commercial and residential construction and for enforcing all ordinances related to Code Compliance, including substandard structures and the voluntary demolition program. The Department is also responsible for inspecting docks on Moss Lake and managing the annual dock permits for the lake.

The Community Development Department is comprised of four (4) basic divisions:

• Planning & Zoning Division is primarily responsible for enforcing land use ordinances and statutes in line with City Council policies, while using effective management practices to ensure the efficient use of the City’s resources.
• Building Permits and Inspections Division strives to uphold current regulations that ensure safety and appropriate accessibility to all buildings in Gainesville. The division provides an effective program for timely reviewing and permitting construction, renovation, and occupancy of all buildings and their appurtenances. 
• Code Compliance Division protects property values and improves the health, safety, and welfare of citizens by obtaining compliance with nuisance, building, zoning, land development, environmental, and other codes and ordinances through effective and equitable enforcement of the codes.
• Food Inspections is committed to protecting people by preventing foodborne illness. Staff conducts routine food safety inspections at all brick and mortar food establishments inside the city limits. In addition, staff also responds to calls from hotels regarding bed bug infestations and supervises the annual permitting and inspection of semi-public and public swimming pools and spas.
