[ARCHIVED] Scam Alert: Fraudsters Impersonating Law Enforcement to Steal Money

Scam Protection Tips

The Gainesville Police Department took a report of a scam involving suspects impersonating law enforcement officials. Scammers are contacting individuals via phone or email, claiming they are at risk of being arrested for false charges. They then use fear tactics to provide detailed instructions for transferring money, claiming this will prevent legal trouble.

The report includes fraudulent documents that were sent to the victim, including one displaying the Cooke County Sheriff’s Office badge to make the scam appear legitimate.

The Gainesville Police Department wants to remind residents that law enforcement agencies do not request money over the phone or email to settle charges. If you receive such a message, do not respond or transfer money. Instead, report the incident to the police immediately.

Stay alert and protect yourself by following updates from the Gainesville Police Department.
