The Home Grown Hero Walking Trail

Tree Planting Program

How would you like to have a tree planted in honor of someone you know who has positively impacted your life or made a significant difference to the city? The Home Grown Hero Walking Trail is lined with majestic Shumard Red Oak trees and we have spaces for the "hero" in your life. The Trail features a "Medal of Honor" section, paying tribute to the Medal of Honor recipients that visit Gainesville every April. Each recipient that visits, receives their very own Shumard Red Oak planted in their honor with a commemorative plaque. Pictured here are George E. "Bud" and Mary Day. Bud served in the Air Force and was a two time Prisoner of War in Vietnam. His tree was planted in 2006.
