Streets Division

The Street Division is responsible for street maintenance including all general repairs needed to repair damage caused by water breaks; maintaining the riding surface of the City streets, such as pothole repair, utility cut repair, reconstruction, overlay coating and other repairs as needed for annual preventive maintenance; special projects for the City and other departments; the installation, repair, and maintenance of signs and markings and signals.

The Street Division responds to emergency situations by barricading, sanding streets, sandbagging, and cleaning storm damage.

Major street maintenance is also done (reconstruction including overlay coating) to City streets.

Annual Street repairs are determined and scheduled according to a “Street Improvement List” which is approved by the City Council.

The City Street Department maintains 90 miles of streets within the Gainesville City limits. The department also provides signs and signals for City streets.

How to Report Street Light Outages

Streetlights are owned and maintained by the local utility company and not by the City. Oncor Services, provides electric utilities in Gainesville, repairs the lights and offers two convenient ways to report a non-working street light.

When reporting the outage, please be prepared to give the following information: your name and a way to contact you; street light location, including nearest address or intersection; the pole number (this number can be found mounted on the pole); and a description of the problem (for example, light not on at night or light pole is leaning or damaged). This will enable Oncor to process service request quickly.

To report any problems with city streets please call 940-668-4540 or 940-668-4541.
