Gainesville to Conduct Solid Waste Pilot Program

The City of Gainesville will conduct a once per week, semi-automated refuse collection pilot program between Tuesday, January 13th and Tuesday, April 7th . The project will be conducted in the area that is east of Elmwood Street, south of O’Neal Street, and north of Broadway Street. The Creek Subdivision will also be included in the study.
Participating customers living in this area have been mailed information about this new system. Specialized 96-gallon carts will be distributed by the city at no cost to affected residential and commercial customers during the week of January 5th . |
Garbage service will be provided on Tuesdays only for those involved with the pilot project. All refuse is required to be bagged and placed in the container. Loose bags and additional accumulations will not be picked up.
Residents that participate in the pilot program can schedule bulk residential collection on the first and third Wednesday’s of non-holiday weeks. Brush and limbs must be cut and stacked into one cubic yard bundles. The city will pick up one cubic yard for no charge. Anything over one cubic yard will be charged at $24.15 per cubic yard. Additional bulky items and appliances can be collected for $25.20 per item. All requests for this additional service must be made 24 hours in advance of the bulk collection date at (940) 668-4551.
Customers should discontinue the use of personal trashcans once they receive the new cart. Starting Tuesday, January 13th the city will only collect refuse in the pilot area from the new carts.
The city will survey those involved with the pilot project to determine the effectiveness of the once per week system. Pilot project customers will pay regular refuse collection charges during the study. For additional information, you may call (940) 668-4553.
