Parking space requirements are established for all Zoning Districts within the Corporate Limits of the City of Gainesville, Texas, by the Zoning Ordinance.
These are normally reviewed as a part of the plan review process or as a part of a Certificate of Occupancy inspection.
Construction requirements for driveways, approaches, Fire Lanes, etc., are contained in Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction published by the North Central Texas Council of Governments. An exception to this is that approaches on State roads require a State permit and construction per their specifications. No new non-residential driveways constructed of gravel will be allowed. Concrete is preferred.
The following general provisions are stated for planning purposes:

Where there is a combination of uses on a lot, the required number of parking spaces shall be the sum of that found for each use.

The number of parking spaces required shall be provided on the same lot where the use is located unless otherwise approved in advance.

Parking stalls shall be 9' wide and 20' long, except that parallel parking stalls shall be 22' long.

Compact car parking stalls, if approved in advance, shall be 8' wide and 18' long. Such spaces shall be labeled.

The width of the parking stall shall be increased by 10" for any obstructions, such as light poles or shopping cart corrals, located on either side of the stall for a distance of 14'.

The number of Handicap or ADA parking spaces shall be in accordance with State of Texas regulations, and the first ADA space shall be Van Accessible. Appropriate signs and striping shall be installed.

Each required parking stall shall be individually and easily accessible. No vehicle shall be required to back into a public street or sidewalk to leave a parking stall when such stall serves more than two dwelling units or other than residential uses.

Every parking facility shall be provided with one or more impervious access driveways (concrete preferred). The minimum width of private driveways shall be 9'. The minimum width of commercial driveways shall be 12'.The minimum width of a two way driveway shall be 24'. The minimum width of Fire Lanes shall be 24'. No new non-residential type driveways constructed of gravel will be allowed.

The maximum slope of any ramp or driveway shall be 20%.

All parking stalls, except single family dwellings, shall be striped.

All light illuminating a parking area shall be designed and located so as to reflect away from any street or adjacent property.

No vehicles will be parked in the sight visibility triangles at traffic intersections.

Loading docks will be considered on a case by case basis.

Uses that may require the parking of truck tractors and trailers, temporary mobile home parking, buses, motor homes or travel trailers, large pick-ups, or other large vehicles will be considered on a case by case basis.
