Contractor Information

  1. The City of Gainesville Building Inspection Office is located at 214 E. Main Street.  The phone number is 940-668-4504.
  1. To work in the City of Gainesville, you must be registered as a contractor with the City. You must fill out an application form and pay the appropriate fee. The current third quarter fee is  $93.75. This will register you with the City of Gainesville for the rest of 2006.
  1. You may also be required to present a copy of your liability insurance when you register.  Contractors doing repair or remodeling work may also be required to register with the Texas Residential Construction Commission.
  1. All plumbers, electricians and air conditioning trades-people are required to have a State of Texas License in addition to being registered with the City. All state licenses must be available for inspection by City of Gainesville Inspectors.
  1. You must display your permit at the job site. A separate permit is required for each job site. You must have a copy of your City of Gainesville Contractor’s License available for inspectors to see at each job site.
  1. If you do not have a permit, you will be given one warning to get one. After that, you will be issued a citation.  If you persist in being a Code Violator after that, you will be arrested.
  1. The fine for non-compliance is set by the Municipal Judge. The fine is up to $2,000.00 per day per violation. The judge favors issuing the maximum fine. Violations of State licensing laws may also be cited by the State. Their fines start at $5,000.00 per day.
  1. There is a strict sign code in Gainesville. Off-premises and portable signs are not allowed. Signs found in the public right-of-way will be impounded and destroyed.  You may place one sign at the job site when you start the job. The sign is to be removed when you finish the job.  If you leave it there, you will be sent a citation in the mail. Citation fines for signs are up to $500.00 per day per sign.  If you do not appear in court, a warrant will be issued for your arrest.
  1. If you or your people give the inspector or the Code Enforcement Officer any problems, you will be arrested.  Any illegal immigrants will be held and turned over to INS.
  1. Remember, the contractor is responsible for his employees conduct.
  1. Quiet hours are from 8 PM to 7 AM.
  1. You are responsible for having on-site sanitation facilities for your employees (Porta-Potties).
  1. Gainesville has exclusive solid waste disposal rights. Your old shingles and debris must be taken to the Coty of Gainesville Transfer Station at 601 N. I-35, or to the regional landfill. Call the Sanitation Department at 940-668-4551 for their current instructions. Illegal dumping carries severe penalties.
