The City of Gainesville does not specify whether an Architect or an Engineer is required for a certain project. The City will provide only the following guidelines:
- The Design Professional (Architect or Engineer) must be registered to practice in the State of Texas.
- The Design Profession must have expertise in the field that he is working in. In other words, mechanical engineers shall not engage in civil engineering, unless they have additional qualifications in this field, and so forth.
- A foundation plan designed by an engineer is required for all commercial foundation systems, and for all residential systems that differ from City of Gainesville specifications.
- All commercial buildings over 5000 square feet or with a span of greater than 26 feet are required to be designed by a design professional by the Texas Engineering Practice Act.
- The City of Gainesville does not recommend any particular architects, engineers or contractors. To do so and then inspect their work could be a conflict of interest.
- The City of Gainesville Storm Water Drainage Ordinance administered by public works, does specify a Civil Engineer for Storm Water Drainage plans and calculations.
- The City of Gainesville Landscape Ordinance does specify a Landscape Architect for landscape plans.
- All commercial Energy Code Calculations are to be done by an engineer.
