Municipal Elections

The second Saturday in May is the Uniform Election date for the City's General Election of City officials in Gainesville, Texas.

The City Charter provides for election of six council members, a mayor, and a municipal judge.  The six council members are elected by the qualified voters in six city wards.  The mayor and municipal judge are elected at large by the qualified voters in all six wards of the city.

In even numbered years the municipal judge is elected at large, and council members are elected in Ward 3, Ward 5, and Ward 6.

In odd numbered years the mayor is elected at large, and council members are elected in Ward 1, Ward 2, and Ward 4.

ELECTION DAY IN GAINESVILLE, TEXAS

Saturday, May 14, 2011 is Election Day in the City of Gainesville, Texas for the purpose of electing four City Council Members by Ward and the Mayor at large.  Council candidates will be voted upon by the qualified voters of City Wards 1, 2, 3, and 4.  Candidates for Mayor will be voted upon by the qualified voters of all City Wards, 1 through 6.

Polls on Election Day are open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

EARLY VOTING PERIOD

All registered voters may vote Early by Personal Appearance during the early voting period.  There will be two days of extended hours of early voting from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Early voting is conducted each weekday during the early voting period, in the Municipal Building (City Hall), 200 South Rusk.  Please use the parking area on Rusk Street in front of the Municipal Building; as handicapped parking and an entrance ramp are provided into the polling place.

The purpose to be served for voting early by personal appearance without reason is to accommodate the majority of registered voters.  The early voting period will be seven days.  During that period and on the election day the registered voter may exercise one of their most valued rights —THE RIGHT TO VOTE.

Where:

The Voter Registrar is located at 212 E. California.  Telephone (940)668-5425

When:
The Voter Registrar can assist you with your registration application Monday through Friday, from the hours of 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., throughout the year.
How:

A person desiring to register to vote must submit an application to the Voter Registrar; the person must be:

  • at least 18 years of age,
  • United States Citizen

Eligibility to Vote -

To be a qualified voter at the polls on Election Day:

  • possess a valid voter registration card,
  • your registration becomes effective on the 30th day after the date of application,
  • if a registered voter changes residence to another ward within the same city, if otherwise eligible, the voter may vote in the ward of the former residence until the voter completes an updated statement of residence, if the voter satisfies the residency requirements.

RULES FOR VOTING AN EARLY BALLOT

Who:

Any person registered at least 30 days prior to the election day.

The Election Code provides for all registered voters to vote an early ballot without cause.

Disabled voters and those over 65 years of age are eligible to vote by mail ballot.

 

Where:

The Municipal Building Conference Room is the Early Voting Polling Location for City Elections.  Parking spaces are available on Rusk Street.

Handicapped parking is provided on Rusk Street at the entrance to the Municipal Building.  This entry has a ramp into the polling location.

 

When:

Early voting is conducted during the normal working hours of the City Secretary’s Office, which is Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.  There will be two days of early voting from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

 

Voting By
Mail:

Applications for a ballot by mail can be accepted from the 60th day before the election through the 7th day before the election date.

 

Mail Ballots:

Ballots to be voted by mail may be mailed to voters who have requested them on or after the 45th day before the election date, or as soon as the printed ballots are ready.

 

Deadline:

Ballots by mail must be received by the City Secretary no later than 7 p.m. on Election Day.

 

Emergency
Absentee:

Election Law provides for a registered voter to vote a late early ballot if a death occurs in a voter’s immediate family on or after the 5th day before the election date.  A voter may also vote a late early ballot if a serious illness occurs on or after the day before the last day for submitting an application for a ballot to be voted by mail.
